Nickelodeon Celebrates Parks.What's better than bird houses--park benches--spring flowers--trees planted--park--clean up & friends? Volunteering at your local park is as easel as Nickelodeon's Big Help! Nickelodeon's Big Help Program recently completed a sixty city tour reaching all fifty states to celebrate youth volunteerism and America's public parks! Hats off to the "Big Helpmobile" crew and local park `and recreation departments nationwide that participated in the Big Help Project. In response to the overwhelming interest youth have expressed in recent years, Nickelodeon made parks the central theme of this 5th anniversary of the Big Help and garnered pledges from youth in 13,000 communities to volunteer to help parks. Supported by Burger King[R], nationwide promotion for the program and for local parks nationwide was unprecedented. NRPA was featured in a special edition of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee Nick News is a television show on Nickelodeon that has aired since 1991. It takes the form of a news program, discussing important issues in a format intended for children, including teen voices on a number of issues and topics. and local park and recreation departments were showcased throughout the year on Nickelodeon. The sixty communities selected for a visit from Nickelodeon were chosen because of the volume of youth pledging their volunteer effort during the October, 1998 Telethon on Nickelodeon. These Park and Recreation Departments rolled out the "green" carpet for the Big Helpmobile as it toured the nation to encourage youth to help their public parks. They created community-wide events that included numerous youth serving organizations and the business community to make their projects a reality. This community-building approach to volunteerism, youth and parks is a clear trademark of how local park and recreation departments create community vitality through the leisure experience!
