    Abseiling (from the German: abseilen, "to rope down") is the process of descending on a fixed rope. Names

     (rope skills). This year's inaugural race takes place in Switzerland from September 3 to 8.

    Fifty teams from around the world have qualified to compete over a secret course (unknown to all participants until the day before the race) in a test of navigation, endurance and physical fitness. Typically team members stop for only about two hours of sleep each day during the competition.

    Team Nextel crewmembers will be using Nextel Worldwide service and the i2000plus phone for communications during the competition.     Team Nextel members are:
    -- Lovelace, from Los Angeles, has an extensive competition record that
    includes eight Ironman Hawaii finishes, over 140 marathons, ten
    ultra-marathons, five international Eco-Challenges and four U.S. Adventure
    Races as well as the Southern Traverse adventure race in New Zealand in 2000.
    He is an assistant vice president at Financial Indemnity Company in Los
    Angeles.
    
    -- Glenn and Tricia Bland of Bakersfield, Calif., who are the only married
    couple participating in the race. Tricia, a cancer survivor, is a registered
    dietitian, who has completed three marathons, two - 100 miles runs and seven
    U.S. Adventure Races. Glenn operates Bland Air Conditioning, a heating,
    ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration contractor - a Nextel business
    customer. Glenn has completed 12 marathons, 18 triathlons, 12 U.S. Adventure
    Races and three - 100 mile runs.
    
    -- Dr. Brian Sturz, from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., who is a podiatrist (a
    handy skill to have in a 450 kilometer race) at Kaiser Permanente in Los
    Angeles. Brian is a veteran of multiple adventure races in the United States
    and competed in the Southern Traverse in 2000.
