The American Red Cross announced that it will spend $317.5 million by year-end from the Liberty Disaster Fund, more than it promised just over one month ago, on aid to more than 36,000 families affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks. The American Red Cross also announced that former United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America.
