Group of Women Business Owners Many online and offline organizations have been created to collect information about businesses around the world owned and operated by women. Many other organizations have been created to assist the women that own and operate those businesses.  Gets a New Leader

WHEN Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire set out to establish her own public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  firm in 1973, she found it nearly impossible to get even a small loan to help get it off the ground. Co-signers were required, and a male partner was recommended.

Twenty-seven years later, Berkhemer-Credaire is a successful entrepreneur who is convinced the environment for women business owners has dramatically improved.

As the new president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners The National Association of Women's Business Owners (NAWBO) is an organization in the United States founded in 1975 that has the purpose of networking the approximately 10. , Berkhemer-Credaire wants to make things even better.

"We have 360,000 women business owners in L.A.," she said. "One of my goals is to triple NAWBO NAWBO National Association of Woman Business Owners  membership here. We want to have 2,000 members by the end of 2001."

Although it's never been considered easy for women to establish themselves in the largely male business world, Berkhemer-Credaire believes now is the time for women to start new businesses and expand existing ones.

"Access to capital is good, and there are favorable market conditions," she said. "Many women don't think about growth. They focus on being able to open their doors, offer a service, pay their employees, and then go home and cook dinner and balance all the other aspects of their life. But growth is the critical factor in making major dollars."

The L.A. chapter of NAWBO is running neck and neck with the Chicago chapter for having the most members in the nation. However, L.A. could soon take the lead, given that it was honored last year as the fastest-growing chapter in the nation.

Berkhemer-Credaire is president of Berkhemer/Clayton Inc., an L.A.-based executive search firm that specializes in senior-level positions.

"I believe that women can do extremely well financially by owning their own business," she said. "It is the best job security and the best retire7 ment plan. It's just a little short on stock options." -- Kristin Wilder
