Watts Named Head of Pacific Bell's Los Angeles Office

SHE may be new to the shifting area codes of Southern California, but Lora Watts, new L.A. regional president for Pacific Bell, is by no means a phone company novice.

She has logged more than 20 years at Pac Bell's parent company, SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Communications in San Antonio, which became the largest regional telephone company in the United States after merging with Ameritech in October.

Watts now plans on making Pacific Bell a leading provider of emerging services like Internet digital subscriber lines and data networks for businesses. Pac Bell currently offers DSL DSL

Broadband digital communications connection that operates over standard copper telephone wires. It requires a DSL modem, which splits transmissions into two frequency bands: the lower frequencies for voice (ordinary
services to about 2.5 million local customers.

In her new position, Watts comes face-to-face with the controversial issue of open- or closed-cable access. The city of L.A. is now considering whether to require cable providers to open their fiber-optic lines to telephone companies and Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.
. As a result, competition between phone companies and cable giants like Media One is intense.

"We believe that all providers of cable service should allow customers a choice of who their Internet provider is," said Watts, noting that Pacific Bell offers multiple options. "I know we have service requirements and standards that we uphold."

In her new role, Watts will direct external affairs activities for Los Angeles and Ventura counties. She said the bulk of her responsibilities involve dealing with government officials. As a regional president, she'll be involved to some degree with Pacific Bell's efforts to sway the California Public Utilities Commission The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC; also often commonly referred to as simply the PUC) [1] is a state Public Utilities Commission which regulates privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power,  on upcoming issues like area code splits and the statewide directory assistance price hike.

Watts most recently served as president of Nevada Bell, where she oversaw all regulatory, legislative, governmental and external affairs. Previous experience at SBC Communications' companies includes marketing for Southwestern Bell during the introduction of caller ID and call return services. Watts graduated magna cum laude with an MBA MBA
