Vista Project Hires Full-Time General Counsel

PLAYA Vista, the 1,087-acre Westside mega-project, has gained sufficient momentum to warrant a full-time general counsel, and principals of the development company have turned to Patricia Timko Sinclair to fulfill that role.

Why wouldn't they? As a member of Latham & Watkins, the legal advisor on the project since 1989, Sinclair is intimately knowledgeable about the development and its majority owner, Playa Capital. She had worked at the Latham & Watkins since 1986.

"This is an opportunity to be involved in every aspect of the project," said Sinclair. "Playa Vista has everything you can envision in the scope of a project residential, commercial, parks and open space."

On the job a little over a week, she has moved into the role of senior vice president and general counsel on all matters for Playa Vista, which has certainly been subjected to its fair share of lawsuits over the years.

Sinclair says her only mission is to see the fully built-out project become reality.

The Playa Vista project site, a long swath of land just south of Marina del Rey, is planned to accommodate 3,246 new homes, apartments and condominiums, plus office space and other commercial buildings.

The development has been the target of environmentalists concerned about the loss of marshes and animal species in the adjacent Ballona Wetlands. Those who favor the project say it could provide much-needed housing in a tight Los Angeles real estate market.

Even though Sinclair has been involved with the project for more than a decade, she said her new role "is significantly different" than the real estate transactions she handled as an outside lawyer.

She now supervises all outside counsel and is responsible for all legal aspects of the project, including leasing and contract administration. She also steps into an advisory role to management on other matters relating to Playa Vista.

"I hadn't realized how, being just down the hall, people will come in and ask questions," said Sinclair. "Because I have worked with the project so many years, many people know me very well."
