Universal Executive to Blend Film, Music

As the new president of film music for Universal Music Group and Universal Pictures, Kathy Nelson plans to be a major link between these two entities.

In her new role, which becomes effective this month, Nelson will be the first executive to oversee both such areas at a major entertainment company. For Universal Music Group, Nelson will oversee the development and production of all soundtrack albums for the company's U.S. labels, including those associated with Universal Pictures' releases. For Universal Pictures, she will manage all aspects of development and production of feature film music.

"There are so many opportunities to be taken advantage of if someone is there to serve both sides," says Nelson, who will be traveling between Burbank and Santa Monica. "Although the businesses (of film and music) are similar, they're not the same."

After 10 years at MCA MCA

Soundtracks, she was most recently president of music for the Buena Vista Motion Picture Group.

"I wanted to do this because when I worked in records I had no direct input for films, and the opposite problem was true for soundtracks," she said. "I wanted to create a synergy."

For now, Nelson says her first priority will be to get acquainted with her new job and determine how to divide her time between two separate locations.

"The hardest part will be balance," she said.

Making sure neither entity will feel like a neglected child is sure to be a challenge, and the dual nature of Nelson's job could be difficult as well.

"I'm OK with the creative aspects of what I'll be doing. I know how to find songs for movies, but the mechanics of working for two companies at once, and running a division that coexists between them, will be difficult," she says.

Accepting a position at Universal will be a homecoming of sorts for Nelson. "When I left MCA, many people had expressed interest in me coming back," says Nelson. "This was what I thought my next job should be."
