Single Client Appeals to General Counsel

AFTER representing various clients for 37 years, attorney Donald P. (Pat) Newell has decided to focus on just one.

Newell has been named senior vice president and general counsel for Los Angeles-based SCPIE SCPIE Southern California Physicians Insurance Exchange  Holdings Inc., a major health care liability insurer whose stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

World's largest marketplace for securities. The exchange began as an informal meeting of 24 men in 1792 on what is now Wall Street in New York City.
. In his new role, Newell will be involved in all facets of SCPIE's business, including underwriting, marketing and claims, with an emphasis on the legal aspects of those operations.

"I'll be directing legal work; I won't be practicing law," said Newell. "This was a good time for me to retire from my law firm, and I think it will be fun to be more directly involved in business management."

Newell is by no means a stranger to health care insurance, or SCPIE for that matter. He provided legal counsel for the company's founding in 1976, and his former firm, Latham & Watkins, has handled SCPIE's corporate and regulatory legal work since that time. He had been managing partner of Latham & Watkins' San Diego office since 1985.

"I'm very familiar with the operation," said Newell.

After practicing law for so long, Newell is excited about the opportunity to focus on a single client. 'There will be challenges in going from a strictly legal career to what is, in large part, a business career," he said. "I think it will be good to be able to focus on just one client and all its prospects and challenges."

Newell, a Los Angeles native, will maintain his primary residence in San Diego, but has rented an apartment in Beverly Hills. He will work out of SCPIE's headquarters office in Century City. "I was here until 1984, and I've always spent a lot of time in Los Angeles. It's no big change," he said.
