.

It's not the first time he's played corporate parent. Cohen spent many of his 11 years at Packard Bell as a senior executive helping that firm grow from a startup into a global operation.

In his new role as president and chief executive of US Search, which provides clients with customized Web access to public records, Cohen plans to increase specialized services for small-and medium-sized businesses.

"I see US Search as being in its infancy," Cohen said about the Los Angeles-based firm. "We want to roll it out in an organized way."

Revenue is derived from public records services, which include locating individuals and doing criminal records searches and professional license verification related to background checks. Thanks to exclusive positioning deals, Web suffers using Yahoo, Lycos and other portals to locate people get defaulted to a US Search link if they can't find who they're looking for Looking for

Originally a phone sales business, US Search estimates that more than 92 percent of its transactions are conducted over the Internet. While sales have more than doubled in the past year, US Search stock has fallen to about $5, down from $17.38 last July.

Cohen wants to win back investor confidence by expanding the current background checks to include services like screenings for rental tenants and management candidates at major retail chains.

Cohen also is reviewing US Search's infrastructure to make sure it can handle increased transactions and the accompanying influx of new employees.

With Packard Bell, Cohen served in a number of roles, including consumer and international president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer. A native of South Africa, he came to Los Angeles as a manager for Arthur Young. He received his MBA MBA
