 are divided over the U.S. proposal to end the long running softwood lumber trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada. U.S. forest products companies have announced support for the proposal. Some Canadian companies support the deal while others are opposed. The proposal would allow Canada access to 31.5% of the U.S. market without trade penalties. The U.S. would drop the 27% across-the-board duty now in place, and refund 52% of the estimated US$ 1.4 billion in payments Canadian firms have made since the trade fight began in 2001. Shipments above the 31.5% quota level (about 17 billion board feet) would be subject to a fee of US$ 200 per 1,000 board feet.
