Profiles in Excellence

APTA recognized 65 individuals for their achievements during the Honors and Awards Ceremony held at the 2007 APTA Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado. Fourteen of these awardees are former Foundation funding recipients.

Catherine Worthingham Fellows of APTA. Holly Lea Cintas, PT, PhD, PCS, FAPTA, recipient of a doctoral training grant in 1989, is a Physical Therapy Coordinator for the Intramural Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md.

Michael J Emery, PT, EdD, FAPTA, recipient of a doctoral training grant in 1985, holds 3 positions at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut: Director of Practice and Clinical Research in the College of Education and Health Professions; Associate Professor and Chairman in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Science; and Clinical Director of the Sacred Heart University's Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center.

Michael T Gross, PT, PhD, FAPTA, recipient of a doctoral training grant in 1986, is Professor in the Department of Allied Health Services at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Mark W Rogers, PT PhD, FAPTA, recipient of doctoral training grants in 1983 and 1989, is Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill.

Susan L Whitney, PT, PhD, NCS, ATC, FAPTA, recipient of a doctoral training grant in 1989, is Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh and a Clinical Consultant to the Raymond E Jordan Balance Lab at the Eye and Ear Institute at the Centers for Rehab Services.

38th Mary McMillan Lecture Award. Katherine F Shepard, PT, PhD, FAPTA, recipient of a doctoral training grant in 1993, currently is Professor Emeritus at Temple University.

It was announced that Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA, will receive the 39th Mary McMillan Lecture Award. A former member of the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee, Delitto was the principal investigator of the Foundation-funded Clinical Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh (1997-1999). He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh.

Irene R McEwen, PT, PhD, FAPTA, a 1987 doctoral training grant awardee, is the George Lynn Cross Research Professor, Director of the Lee Mitchener Tolbert Center for Developmental Disabilities, and Director of the Post-professional Graduate Program at the University of Oklahoma.

Eugene Michels New Investigator Award. Steven Z George, PT, PhD, received a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship in 2000 and a PODS II in 2001. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the Brooks Center for Rehabilitation Studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Jules M Rothstein Golden Pen Award for Scientific Writing. Michael J Mueller, PT, Phi), FAPTA, a 2-time doctoral training grant awardee in 1987 and 1991, is Associate Professor in the Program in Physical Therapy and the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering, Division Director of Research, and Associate Director of the Movement Science Program at Washington University in St Louis.

Helen J Hislop Award for Outstanding Contributions to Professional Literature. Christopher M Powers, PT, PhD, a member of the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee, received 3 awards from the Foundation, including research grants in 1993 and 2001. Powers also was a co-lead investigator of the Foundation's Clinical Research Network (CRN) project, the largest project ever funded by the Foundation or APTA, awarded in 2002. He is Associate Professor, Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy, University of Southem California.

Chattanooga Research Award. Michael J Mueller, PT, PhD, FAPTA, and Donovan J Lott, PT, PhD, CSCS. Lott is a 3 time PODS awardee: PODS I in 2004, and PODS II in 2005 and 2006. Lott is Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Jack Walker Award. Margaret Schenkman, PT, PhD, received a doctoral training grant in 1990 and a 2001 research grant. Schenkman is Professor and Director of the Physical Therapy Program, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado, Denver Health Sciences Center in Colorado.

Dorothy E Baethke-Eleanor I Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching. Philip W McClure, PT, PhD, recipient of a 1994 doctoral training grant and 1999 research grant, is Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Arcadia University.

Former Trustees Receive Service Award

Nancy White, PT, MS, OCS, former president and member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees, and Francis Welk, PT, DPT, MEd, former Treasurer, were awarded the Lucy Blair Service Award for their exceptional contributions to the Association.

Foundation Funded Research Presented at PT 2007

At PT 2007 in Denver, Jennifer Stevens, PT, MPT, PhD, a PODS I recipient (2000), a PODS II recipient (2001), and a Magistro Family Research Grant recipient in 2007, gave a poster presentation, based on Foundation-funded research, titled "Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Functional Performance Measures After Total Knee Arthroplasty."

A Fond "Farewell to Frank" Foundation Dinner Dance

The Foundation's 2007 Black Tie & Boots Dinner Dance in Denver, Colorado, gave Foundation supporters and friends the opportunity to bid farewell to APTA CEO Frank Mallon upon his retirement. Throughout his years at APTA, Frank's enthusiastic support of physical therapy research and the profession is undeniable.

Emcee for the evening, Charles T Wetherington, BTE Technologies President and Foundation Trustee, announced that an incredible $244,110 was raised by physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students through this year's Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge. This record-setting year pushed the Challenge well past the $1 million mark in funds raised since the Challenge was started 19 years ago by students at Marquette University. In a surprise announcement, Anthony Delitto, PT, PhD, FAPTA, University of Pittsburgh, revealed Pittsburgh's retirement from the Challenge. After winning the Challenge for the past 10 consecutive years and raising a total of $265,000 for the Foundation, Delitto said it was time to give another school a shot at the top prize. The University of Pittsburgh plans to continue fundraising for the Challenge, and has been designated by the Foundation Board of Trustees as the co-sponsor with founder Marquette University.

Marilyn Moffat, PT, PhD, FAPTA, CSCS, announced the winners of the annual Split Raffle. The fundraiser garnered $160,000 for the Foundation for Physical Therapy. To see a list of the winners, please go to the Foundation's Web site at www. FoundationforPhysicalTherapy.org.

The 2007 Spirit of Philanthropy Award was bestowed on 2 leaders in the physical therapy industry this year for their outstanding contributions to the Foundation for Physical Therapy and its mission and to the entire physical therapy profession. This year's recipients are: Donald F Lang, former Foundation Trustee and Treasurer, and retiring APTA CEO, Francis J Mallon, Esq.

The Foundation's Charles M Magistro Distinguished Service Award went to H Philip Vierling, a past Foundation Trustee from 2003 to 2005. Vierling opened doors for the Foundation to physical therapy-related corporations, resulting in support from new corporate partners that enabled the Foundation to fund the $1.5 million Clinical Research Network.

APTA's Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section and Sports Physical Therapy Section were awarded the Robert C Bartlett Innovation in Fundraising Award.
