: The United Steelworkers today announced that Stan Johnson has been sworn in as director of the union's District 9 to succeed retiring Director Connie Entrekin.

Johnson, who was named by Entrekin as his assistant director in January, 2005, took the oath of office An oath of office is an oath or affirmation a person takes before undertaking the duties of an office, usually a position in government or within a religious body, although such oaths are sometimes required of officers of other organizations.  today during a meeting of the union's International Executive Board in Beaumont, Texas.

A native of Springfield, Tenn., Johnson started his career as a production worker for Pirelli Armstrong Tire, where he held various local union offices, including President of then-United Rubber Workers Local 670. He also served on the Rubber Worker's International Executive Board.

After the URW's 1995 merger with the USW, Johnson served the union in Pittsburgh as National Rapid Response Coordinator, Director of the Dislocated dis·lo·cate

Johnson relocated to Cornelius, N.C. in early 2003 as Sub-District Director. He later moved to Birmingham, Ala., where he was subsequently appointed Assistant Director of District 9.

He was instrumental in coordinating the USW's relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Johnson and his wife, Janie, have two daughters and one grandchild.

Entrekin had been District 9 Director since April 2003, when he was appointed by unanimous vote of the International Executive Board to serve the remaining term of retiring District 9 Director Homer Wilson. In 2005, he was elected by acclamation to a full term as director.

Before becoming a director, Entrekin held a number of positions in the labor movement, including President of Local 4382 in Gadsden, Ala., beginning in 1959. He was elected President of the Gadsden Labor Council in 1970, and Executive Vice President and COPE Director for the Alabama AFL-CIO AFL-CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

Entrekin was appointed to the USW staff in 1977, servicing the Gulf Coast region. He served as Director of legislative and PAC activities for the former District 36 before being appointed Assistant to the Director of District 9 in 1996.

Additionally, Entrekin chaired negotiations for Rexaam Can North America and Ball Container, was Secretary of Negotiations for Crown, Cork and Seal, and served as a member of the International Appeals Committee.

District 9 covers Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). Facts and Figures
