IFEH is an international trade association whose members are national societies of environmental health professionals in countries around the globe. The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Founded in 1883, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is a professional and educational body, dedicated to the promotion of environmental health and to encouraging the highest possible standards in the training and the work of environmental health professionals. (CIEH CIEH Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (UK) ) has joined with the Tanzanian health officers association (CHAMATA) to help it negotiate the introduction of degree-level education for environmental health officers in Tanzania. The new degree course starts in September 2000. Meanwhile, IFEH has undertaken to raise money for a library: This project is called the IFEH Tanzania Library Appeal. The library books will be donated to our environmental health colleagues in Tanzania--not to a university, not to a charity, and not to a government department. That is of fundamental importance as it guarantees that IFEH support is directed totally, and with confidence, at the development of our profession. CHAMATA hopes to open the library this fall, in conjunction with an IFEH Council meeting in Dar Es Salaam Dar es Salaam Largest city (pop., 1995 est.: 1,747,000), capital, and major port of Tanzania. Founded in 1862 by the sultan of Zanzibar, it came under the German East Africa Co. in 1887. . Donations to date (including pledges) total [pounds]22,674.47. NEHA members will be interested to know that NEHA has raised $1,200 against a "teddy bear teddy bear cuddly commodity named after President Theodore Roosevelt. [Am. Hist.: Frank, 46] See : Cuteness ," and that NSF International NSF International, formerly National Sanitation Foundation, is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that develops standards and provides product certification and education in the field of public health and safety. has matched that amount. The appeal continues, however. IFEH invites commerce, industry, and charitable bodies to identify with the library project and make donations. John McCandless, coordinator of the fund and immediate past chair of the CIEH Council, has challenged every environmental health officer and every environmental health department to raise money for the fund. Donations should be made payable to "CIEH (Tanzanian Appeal)." For further information, visit the Web site at [less than]www.ceejay.domon.co.uk/books/appeal.htm[greater than]. |
