historic labour union representing workers in steel, aluminum, and other metallurgical industries for much of the 20th century. In the U.S.
 (USW) has filed a class action suit in Knoxville, Tenn., federal court on behalf of Alcoa and former Reynolds master contract location retirees who had their retiree medical benefits unilaterally changed by Alcoa in January 2006.

The lawsuit seeks monetary and injunctive relief injunctive relief n. a court-ordered act or prohibition against an act or condition which has been requested, and sometimes granted, in a petition to the court for an injunction.  on behalf of the adversely affected retirees, spouses, surviving spouses and dependents and an award of attorneys' fees and court costs court costs n. fees for expenses that the courts pass on to attorneys, who then pass them on to their clients or, in some kinds of cases, to the losing party. .

"Alcoa has just announced record profits," said USW District 7 Director Jim Robinson. "Alcoa has a contractual obligation to continue providing agreed upon health care benefits to retirees and their families who have given their work lives to building this company into the world's premier aluminum producer."

Robinson, who serves as the USW's chief negotiator with Alcoa, said that union members are outraged over the company's actions.
