News From DuPont Shareholders for Fair Value: Investors Send DuPont Management a Message, Loud and Clear-- Now is the Time to Move on Safer Alternatives to PFOA.

WILMINGTON, Del. -- News From DSFV: Shareholders today sent the management of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) a resounding message that the company is not moving quickly enough to end the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

27.3% of investors voted in favor of a resolution filed by Amalgamated Bank's LongView Collective Investment Fund asking management to report on options to accelerate the company's phaseout of the use of PFOA. PFOA is used in production of Teflon(R) cookware and grease and stain repellent coatings for carpets, textiles and fast-food wrappers, and is of concern due to persistence in the environment and potential health effects such as cancer, liver damage, and birth defects.

With 480 million shares voted at the shareholder meeting, 27.3% of the vote (reported in a preliminary count) reflects $5.7 billion in shareholdings.

Sanford Lewis, of DuPont Shareholders for Fair Value (DSFV) put the vote in perspective: "Whenever resolutions on environmental or toxic chemical issues are filed, if they get more than 10% of the vote, we believe it sends a message to management that shareholders are growing very concerned. By contrast, a vote of this magnitude is so big that it can't be ignored. We hope management takes action based on this resounding show of concern."

The PFOA resolution was one of the highest percentage votes ever recorded on contested resolutions concerning environmental issues.

DSFV attributes the high vote to shareholder concern that competitors are quickly offering alternatives in markets where DuPont sells products containing PFOA. "If our company doesn't offer PFOA-free alternatives, competitors appear ready to step into the breach," said Lewis.

DuPont, according to Lewis, "has tried to spin its participation in EPA's ten-year PFOA Stewardship program as implying a phaseout." But according to Lewis, "DuPont has only agreed with EPA to put a "cap" on the amount of PFOA in consumer products and emissions and to look for new non-PFOA products over time." In the meantime, he said, DuPont faces new consumer and regulatory risks.

DSFV is an informal group of DuPont shareholders that includes Amalgamated Bank's LongView Collective Investment Fund, the United Steelworkers Union ("USW"), Green Century Capital Management and the Sisters of Mercy, Merion Regional Community, Merion, PA.
