Newly Issued Digimarc Patents Enable Better Management and Protection of Movies and Music.

) today announced the issuance of new patents covering a range of innovations that enable better management and protection of entertainment content such as music and movies.

Some of the inventions covered within the more than 30 recently issued patents relate to:

--Controlling video with reference to out-of-band data Data transmitted with the primary data stream that is considered a control signal and which demands immediate attention. The receiving side must pass the out-of-band (OOB) data to the appropriate software routine in front of any other data that has been buffered and not yet processed,  conveyed with the video (e.g., VBI See vertical blanking interval.  data or headers) and information hidden in the video. --Hiding information in audio signals in a way that survives manipulation of the audio, such as audio compression Encoding digital audio data to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth. Audio compression typically uses lossy methods, which eliminate bits that are not restored at the other end. ADPCM and MP3 are examples of audio compression methods. --Robust audio watermark A watermark embedded within an audio stream to identify its origination. See digital watermark.  detection technology useful for copy control, broadcast monitoring, copyright identification and remote triggering. U.S. Patent No. 6,944,298.

--Leveraging watermarks embedded in both audio and video portions of multimedia content (e.g., movies) for applications like content identification and protection. U.S. Patent No. 6,975,746.
