Newborn Infants Protected Against Abduction With Iris Recognition.

Business Editors/Hi-Tech Writers

MOORESTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 2002

Iridian Technologies today announced that iris recognition Iris recognition is a method of biometric authentication that uses pattern recognition techniques based on high-resolution images of the irides of an individual's eyes. Not to be confused with another less prevalent ocular-based technology, retina scanning, iris recognition uses  now protects access to an infant station in the City Hospital of Bad Reichenhall Bad Reichenhall (bät rī`khənhäl) or Reichenhall, town (1994 pop. 17,050), Bavaria, S central Germany, on the Saalach River, near the Austrian border. It is a year-round health resort.  in Bavaria, Germany.

The hospital installed iris recognition to prevent baby abductions. This is the first time the technology has been used for infant protection, as it is more traditionally associated with border control and simplified passenger travel in airports.

Iridian Technologies holds the exclusive U.S. and international patents on the core concepts and technologies behind iris recognition - the fastest, most accurate biometric technology available.

Byometric, a systems integrator and a partner of Iridian Technologies, completed installation of the secure entry system in Bavaria. The highly accurate technology now permits only authorized people to gain access to the infant station. Authorized individuals include the mothers, nurses or doctors.

These individuals will enroll their iris in the system by glancing at an iris-recognition enabled camera. In seconds, a unique IrisCode(R) template is generated that will later be matched against "live" samples of the iris whenever that person wants to enter the room.

Once the child is released from the infant station, the mothers' IrisCode(R) data is removed from the system and they are no longer allowed access.

"Due to the support of the Bavarian State Secretary of Health Georg Schmid we have been able to bring this one-of-a-kind secure entry solution to Bad Reichenhall Hospital," said Alexander Lau, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "This initiative is yet another example of the unprecedented capabilities of Iridian's technology to accurately identify individuals," said Frank Fitzsimmons Frank Fitzsimmons (August 7, 1907 – May 6, 1981), was President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from Jimmy Hoffa's conditional pardon in 1971 until his own death from cancer in 1981. , chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

About Iris Recognition Technology

Iris recognition technology identifies people by the unique patterns of the iris - the colored ring around the pupil of the eye. Iris recognition is the highest-accuracy, single-factor identification method in the world.

Iridian's patented Private ID(TM) technology includes camera drivers for IrisCode(R) creation using standard video technology without bright lights or lasers. KnoWho(TM) Authentication Server A device used in network access control. It stores the usernames and passwords that identify the clients logging in, or it may hold the algorithms for token access (see authentication token).  is Iridian's highly scalable server that provides interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  for all Private ID-enabled cameras and applications.
