New walk dedicated at West Point. (Transcripts).


Dedication ceremonies were held recently to mark the reconstruction of Thayer Walk at the United States Military Academy United States Military Academy, at West Point, N.Y.; for training young men and women to be officers in the U.S. army; founded and opened in 1802. The original act provided that the Corps of Engineers stationed at West Point should constitute a military academy, but  at West Point, N.Y. The reconstruction of Thayer Walk and surrounding areas that form the heart of the Cadet Core, was designed by Vollmer Associates in conjunction with the Academy's bicentennial bi·cen·ten·ni·al

 celebration. The Cadet Core has been designated a National Historic Landmark A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, district, site, structure, or object, almost always within the United States, officially recognized by the United States government for its historical significance. .

The design reflects Thomas Jefferson's vision of the Cadet Core as an "academic village." The plan transforms an unattractive asphalt road into an inviting pedestrian open space, with a unifying and coherent theme. An integral part of this campus enhancement is the memorials for the classes of 1957, 1961, 1965, and 1974. The class, of '57 memorial is an honor court of polished granite, Corinthian granite, and limestone sitting walls at Thayer Walk's north end, combining the Academy's honor code

Reconciliation Plaza at Thayer Walk's southern entry, comprising granite blocks against a stone wall overlooking the Hudson.
