New walk dedicated at West Point. (Transcripts).

Dedication ceremonies were held recently to mark the reconstruction of Thayer Walk at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. The reconstruction of Thayer Walk and surrounding areas that form the heart of the Cadet Core, was designed by Vollmer Associates in conjunction with the Academy's bicentennial celebration. The Cadet Core has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

The design reflects Thomas Jefferson's vision of the Cadet Core as an "academic village." The plan transforms an unattractive asphalt road into an inviting pedestrian open space, with a unifying and coherent theme. An integral part of this campus enhancement is the memorials for the classes of 1957, 1961, 1965, and 1974. The class, of '57 memorial is an honor court of polished granite, Corinthian granite, and limestone sitting walls at Thayer Walk's north end, combining the Academy's honor code with quotes from historic military leaders. Reconciliation Plaza at Thayer Walk's southern entry, comprising granite blocks against a stone wall overlooking the Hudson. A five-step pentagonal amphitheater from the class of 1965 depicts the role of technology in the Academy's learning process. The class of 1974 memorial is two at-grade hexagonal intersections along the main spine of Thayer Walk, with a bronze plaque depicting modern-day conflicts and individual plaques illustrating West Point graduates' contributions to exploration, service, commerce, and knowledge.
