New virtual prototype tool from Rockfield. (Packaging Equipment).

Rockfield Software Ltd has recently developed a virtual prototyping tool for simulating the manufacture of shaped beverage and food cans. The aim of the system is to help clients make an informed decision. They are able to assess the feasibility of new shaped can designs and identify potential forming problems before time consuming and expensive trials are performed.

The can forming process is completely modelled starting from the initial blank through draw, redraw To redisplay an image on screen whether text or graphics. The concept is that the first time elements are displayed, they are "drawn," and if something is changed, they are "redrawn." Applications often have a Refresh command that redraws the screen.  and ironing preform pre·form

Rockfield has developed this technology within their commercial FE system, ELFEN, which has already been applied extensively to investigate other aspects of can design and forming processes including beading beading,
