New ventures in carbon nanotubes.

Two more firms have joined the race to produce carbon nanotubes See nanotube.  in commercial quantities at reasonable prices. These pure carbon tubes are 10,000 times finer than a human hair--1 to 60 nanometers (nm) wide and at least 1000 to 10,000 nm long. They have exciting potential as conductive conductive

having the quality of readily conducting electric current.

conductive flooring
flooring or floor covering made specially conductive to electrical current, usually by the inclusion of copper wiring that is earthed

One new player is Arkema of France (U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia), which recently launched the first nanotube A carbon molecule that resembles a cylinder made out of chicken wire one to two nanometers in diameter by any number of millimeters in length. Accidentally discovered by a Japanese researcher at NEC in 1990 while making Buckyballs, they have potential use in many applications.  plant in Europe. This pilot facility can produce up to 11 tons/yr. The product will be officially launched this month at the JEC Composites show in Paris. Tel: (800) 225-7788 * PTDirect: 149GR

Also, Raymor Industries, Advanced Powders & Coatings Div., Montreal, plans to launch its first "high-capacity" plant, capable of up to around 3.5 tons/yr, by the end of this month. Tel: (514) 932-8805 * www.raymor.com
