New top managers named for TMI and Oyster Creek.


PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 5, 1995--GPU Nuclear Corp. has named new top managers at its nuclear power plants in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

James Knubel, 48, was named director of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Middletown, PA, effective Sept. 1. He will succeed Gary Broughton, whose recently announced promotion to president of GPU Nuclear will become effective by the end of the year.

Michael B. Roche, 50, was named director of Oyster Creek Nuclear Station, Forked River, NJ, effective January 1996, when the current director, John J. Barton John J. Barton (born June 23, 1906 in Indianapolis, IN; died May 4, 2004 in Indianapolis) served one term as mayor of Indianapolis. During his time in office, plans were made for the construction of the Indiana Convention Center. He was defeated for re-election by Richard Lugar. , is to retire.

GPU Nuclear president and chief executive officer Phillip R. Clark said, "The earlier selection of Gary Broughton as the new president and the appointments of the plant directors round out a team that will move GPU Nuclear forward into a new era."

Knubel, who is currently plant operations director at Oyster Creek, has held upper management positions at the company's Parsippany headquarters in the areas of regulatory affairs, quality assurance, security and corporate planning. An employee with the GPU System for more than 20 years, Knubel began with the company as a training administrator for Jersey Central Power & Light Company (JCP&L) at Oyster Creek, where he was licensed as a senior reactor operator.

Knubel, of Oradell, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the nuclear navy for five years. He received a master of business administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University Fairleigh Dickinson University, at Florham-Madison and Teaneck-Hackensack, N.J.; coeducational; incorporated and opened 1942 as a junior college, became a four-year college in 1948 and a university in 1956. .

Roche currently serves as a vice president at Parsippany with responsibilities that include strategic planning and performance improvement. He previously served as vice president of radiological and environmental controls for GPU Nuclear and headed the successful defueling and cleanup of TMI-2 from 1988-90. He was director of a transmission line project in Pennsylvania from 1990-93, when it was cancelled after necessary regulatory approvals were not received.

Roche, of Califon, N.J., joined the GPU System in 1974 as an environmental scientist for JCP&L and later assumed management responsibilities that covered environmental affairs and safety at TMI TMI Too Much Information
