New technology may be too good.

Trenton, N.J.-A small company in Lakewood, N.J. has developed a process that can rid glass of antimony (lead solder), lead and phosphorus. The process is so effective that the company is fast becoming the processing facility of choice for leaded glass.

Ironically, the process may be too good. Computer and electronic processing facilities have been sending so much glass to the company, called Ecoglass Recycling Inc. The company may outgrow the location before they are ready to move. "We are investigating the logistics of a new facility to accommodate growth," Charles McFadden, a spokesman for the company explained. "We were just unprepared for this many requests in such a short time."

Televisions and monitors that contain lead must be recycled in an environmentally proper fashion. Until Ecoglass Recycling Inc., companies, environmentalists and public works officials had to rely on the limited and costly applications in existence. Ecoglass Recycling Inc. offers a process that satisfies all environmental concerns, is the least expensive and is the most efficient. All of these factors make their process the superior choice in the industry.

Manufacturers prefer the processed glass that Ecoglass Recycling Inc. produces over the competition because the cullet is cleaned to precision and helps with their own processing. "Because of our process the glass to glass applications can use great volumes of our cullet in their own processing. It doesn't have the impurities that ruin the manufacturers creation of new glass," McFadden explained.

McFadden went on to tell us that the process was done out of the necessity for a struggling CRT glass recycling industry. Ecoglass Recycling Inc. recognized the real problem was manufacturers were getting glass the way the recyclers wanted to send it, rather than process the glass the way the manufacturers wanted it. "We knew manufactures in the industry would be able to use more of the glass if it was processed in a certain way."

McFadden says the EPA actually prefers the Ecoglass Recycling Inc. type of processing over incineration or smelting because the process is higher on the EPA's targeted recycling hierarchy scale.

"It is always better to reuse rather than anything else," adds McFadden.

"Smelting anything puts an enormous burden on our atmosphere with regard to pollution and the Greenhouse Effect."

The glass processed by Ecoglass Recycling Inc. is so clean it not only became the preferred choice of glass to glass manufactures of funnel glass, but in a variety of other applications as well, such as aggregate, fiberglass and even marbles.

Environmentalists also like Ecoglass Recycling Inc. over the competition because the cleaning agents and filters used are also recycled. Chemicals are taken at the end of the process, filtered and the same water returns to be reused once again.
