New study reveals the first 12-hour antihistamine effective for treating colds.

DALLAS--(HealthWire)--Feb. 21, 1996--There still may not be a cure for the common cold, but now there is a new way to relieve its symptoms.

For the first time, two well controlled clinical studies have proven that an antihistamine antihistamine (ăn'tĭhĭs`təmēn), any one of a group of compounds having various chemical structures and characterized by the ability to antagonize the effects of histamine.  significantly reduces cold symptoms.

In a recent study "Clemastine as a Treatment for Symptoms of the Common Cold," a group with naturally occurring colds was given medications. One-half of the group was provided clemastine fumarate, the other half a placebo. Results showed the clemastine fumarate reduced runny noses and sneezing by up to 50 percent over the study group using the placebo.
