New stretch-blow process slashes PET bottle weight.


Bottle manufacturer Graham Packaging Co., York, Pa., has developed a proprietary stretch-blow molding technology that cuts the weight of hot-fill PET monolayer
1. A film or layer one molecule thick formed at the interface between water and either oil or air by a substance such as a partially esterified fatty acid that contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in the same molecule.
2. A confluent sheet of cells, one cell deep, growing on a surface in a cell culture.
 bottles without design changes or loss of performance. Patent-pending "super lightweight" technology cuts weight by 7% to 12% for bottles from 8 oz to 1 gal.

The company declined to reveal specific details but said the new molding process features a special mold and preform design and precise parison distribution. "This special molding process in effect distributes the plastic where it's needed and removes it where it's not needed," said Toshi Kojitani, director of Graham Packaging's PET product line.

The first commercial application is a multi-serve, hot-fill bottle for a U.S. customer. The bottle is blown in the same mold used for the current heavier version of the same bottle. The new bottle thus has the same look, height, diameter, and footprint as the current version. Graham notes that the new technology is an easy drop-in that doesn't disturb a customer's brand image or filling-line set-up. Applications are being explored in hot-fill juices, teas, and isotonics.
