New special Ed guide.


Look for Scholastic's new book, Understanding Special Education (Scholastic Professional Books, 2005), by Cynthia M. Stowe. It includes definitions and characteristics of 16 challenges students may face, including autism autism (ô`tĭzəm), developmental disability resulting from a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain. It is characterized by the abnormal development of communication skills, social skills, and reasoning. , dyslexia dyslexia (dĭslĕk`sēə), in psychology, a developmental disability in reading or spelling, generally becoming evident in early schooling. To a dyslexic, letters and words may appear reversed, e.g. , emotional disorders, and being gifted and talented. The book also covers privacy, eligibility, and Individualized Education Programs In the United States an Individualized Education Program, commonly referred to as an IEP, is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In Canada an equivalent document is called an Individual Education Plan.  (IEPs).
