New software capabilities for Cisco ATM platforms will accelerate ATM deployment, enhance company's end-to-end solution.SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 1995--Cisco Systems today announced a package of software capabilities that will enable its Asynchronous Transfer Mode See ATM. (communications) Asynchronous Transfer Mode - (ATM, or "fast packet") A method for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth using a fixed-size packet (called a cell). See also ATM Forum, Wideband ATM. ATM acronyms. Indiana acronyms. (ATM) platforms to be used in building larger, easier-to-deploy ATM networks that support emerging technologies such as virtual networking, videoconferencing and multimedia. Available in August as part of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) for ATM, the new software features will enhance the Cisco LightStream 100 and LightStream 2020 ATM switches and the Cisco 7000 router's ATM Interface Processor (AIP AIP acute intermittent porphyria. AIP Acute intermittent porphyria ). Larry Lang, Cisco marketing director for ATM products, said, "Realizing ATM's promise of unprecedented performance and scalable bandwidth requires not only cell-switching hardware, but a highly sophisticated software infrastructure to link ATM switches into a network that can interoperate with already installed LANs and WANs. The Cisco IOS now provides that infrastructure across the entire CiscoFusion architecture for switched internetworks, encompassing both routers and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. and ATM switches. "The new capabilities enhance what is already the only complete end-to-end ATM solution from any vendor," Lang added. "Cisco provides a single source for ATM products starting at the network backbone, including the workgroup and the router, and even bringing ATM to desktop `power users.'" New features for the Cisco 7000 AIP card include LAN Emulation (LANE), which allows higher-layer protocols and applications to run unmodified over ATM; point-to-multipoint signaling, which eliminates the need for individual circuits in broadcast applications such as multimedia; and support for RFC 1577, which maximizes the operation of IP (the protocol widely used on the Internet and in private networks) over ATM. New features for the LightStream 100 modular workgroup/campus ATM switch include point-to-multipoint signaling; and Dynamic IISP IISP Information Infrastructure Standards Panel (ANSI) IISP Interim Interswitch Signaling Protocol IISP Institute of Information Security Professionals IISP International Institute for Software Process (Interim Inter-Switch Signaling Protocol) and ILMI ILMI Integrated Local Management Interface ILMI Interim Local Management Interface ILMI Interim Link Management Interface (ATMF) ILMI Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor (US National Park Service) (Interim Local Management Interface), which enable the switch to automatically set up connection paths and map addresses, rather than requiring that the network administrator perform these tasks manually. New features for the LightStream 2020 enterprise ATM backbone switch include high performance multicast service utilizing point-to-multipoint connections; application-specific Quality of Service, which extends ATM bandwidth-allocation functions to Ethernet and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. networks; T1/E1 circuit emulation, which permits the connection of PBX, TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission. and video conferencing across an ATM network using constant bit-rate services; and a frame relay network node interface (networking) Network Node Interface - (NNI) The ATM Forum's specification for connections between network nodes. NNI makes network routing possible. It typically refers to backbone trunk connections between ATM switching equipment. See also: UNI. , which allows the LightStream 2020 to connect to other vendors' frame relay switches. Also being introduced is an eight-port T3/E3 card which boosts the 2020's port density and provides increased performance to "line speed" (45 or 34 Mbps).
