The withdrawal was prompted by clinical data indicating that patients taking 25 milligrams or more of Vioxx per day for more than 18 months had an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke. Vioxx maker Merck & Co. estimates that 105 million U.S. prescriptions were written for the drug from May 1999--when it first entered the market--through August 2004 and that about 20 million U.S. patients took it.
