New resins for SMC, VARTM, open molding.

Several new polyester and vinyl ester Vinyl Ester, or Vinylester, is a resin produced by the esterification of an epoxy resin with an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. The reaction product is then dissolved in a reactive solvent, such as styrene, to a 35 - 45 percent content by weight.  resins have been introduced by Ashland Composite Polymers, Columbus, Ohio. . It is said to "virtually eliminate" paint popping. It is also more resistant to cracking and crazing, and it can be used in low-density SMC, according to Ashland.

Also new is a series of polyesters and vinyl esters tailored specifically for vacuum infusion. The series (including Hetron, Aropol, Modar, and AME See AIT.  2000 grades) offers low viscosity for rapid infusion and a range of cure times.

Third is a new low-styrene polyester for filament winding or hand lay-up of underground storage tanks. It contains less than 35% styrene sty·rene
