Panasonic Personal Computer Company today announced its new multimedia notebook PC, the CF-61. The CF-61 has increased CPU performance with an Intel Pentium 150MHz processor. In addition, an integrated 8X CD-ROM drive is now standard.

The design philosophy of Panasonic's CF-61 continues to respond to the needs of the mobile professional with a lightweight magnesium alloy case LCD that is 20 times the stronger than typical ABS plastic case. A special shock resistant mounting design protects the hard drive.

, P150 CPU, and 2.2GB of storage, the CF-61 takes the pole position for presentation class notebooks," comments John Harris, Director of Marketing for Panasonic Personal Computer Company. "Complimenting the success of Panasonic's recently introduced CF-62, the world's first notebook PC with an integrated PD drive, the CF-61 offers enhanced multimedia functionality and true desktop replacement performance," further notes Harris.

New Pentium Processors

The CF-61 offers users two of Intel's latest-generation CPUs for notebook platforms: the 150MHz Pentium or 120MHz Pentium processor. Both CPUs use 256KB of pipelined burst L2 cache as standard to achieve the optimum performance. The CF-61 also incorporates 16MB of high speed EDO Edo: see Tokyo, Japan.  (Extended Data Out) memory, expandable up to 80MB.

 Architecture

The CF-62 features 32-bit PCI system bus design for outstanding speed and performance particularly for multimedia applications including full motion full screen video and sixteen bit sound. Complementing this is a new graphics accelerator, a 64-bit VRAM See video RAM.

PC Card Design Features ZV Port and CardBus

To support high-performance PC cards including video capture, video conferencing and MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). , the CF-61 incorporates ZV (Zoomed Video) Port technology. ZV Port provides a direct data path for video from the PC Card to the video circuit decoder of the graphics controller, bypassing the notebook's CPU. This allows faster and higher quality video data handling for multimedia applications. The CF-61 also supports the new PC Card CardBus standard, with 32-bit data bus, and accepts two Type II cards or one Type III card See PC Card. .

Access CD-ROM & Floppy Drive Simultaneously

The CF-61 uses Panasonic's unique Multimedia Pocket(TM), which houses the included floppy disk drive floppy disk drive - disk drive . The Multimedia Pocket design allows the FDD (1) Abbreviation for floppy disk drive. See floppy disk.

and integrated 8X CD-ROM to be used simultaneously, unlike many notebook PCs on the market. The Multimedia Pocket also accepts the CF-VEV611W MPEG decoder pack with NTSC (National TV Standards Committee) The committee that developed the television standards for the U.S, which are also used in Canada, Japan, South Korea and several Central and South American countries. Both the committee and the standard are called "NTSC.  output for full-screen, full-motion video playback of MPEG and Video CD files.

12.1 Inch Active Matrix Color LCD is Easy to Read, Indoors or Out

The CF-61 features a 12.1 inch (diagonal) TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

active matrix color LCD with a choice of two resolutions: 1024 x 768 XGA (EXtended Graphics Array) A screen resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. The term stems from IBM's XGA display standard introduced in 1990, which extended VGA to 132-column text and interlaced 1,024x768x256 resolution. XGA-2 later added non-interlaced 1,024x768x64K.  or 800 x 600 SVGA (Super VGA) A screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. Third-party vendors extended IBM's VGA display standard and were the first to use the term. SVGA has also referred to 1,024x768 resolutions. See PC display modes. . Both resolutions support 65,536 simultaneous colors and can drive external monitors at a resolution up to 1024 x 768. For graphics processing, the CF-61 uses a new high performance Chips & Technology graphics controller, 2MB EDO RAM video memory, and 64-bit BitBLT graphics acceleration. These combined features make the CF-61 ideal for even the most graphics and motion video-intensive multimedia programs.

For mobile professionals who work both indoors and out, all CF-61s feature Panasonic's DayBrite(TM) screen technology. DayBrite features very low reflectivity combined with high contrast, for optimum viewing in a wide variety of lighting conditions.

Additional Design Features for the Mobile Professional

Other features that contribute to the ruggedness, reliability and convenience of the CF-61 include: - HDD (Hard Disk Drive) See hard disk and HDD caddy.

HDD - hard disk drive
cushioned mounting system - Fast IrDA 4MB port for wireless connection with external peripherals - LCD status panel is easy to read indoors and out - Screen brightness and sound volume easily controlled with Fn+R/L R/L Real Life
R/L Return Link
,

Fn+U/D U/D Up/Down  arrow keys - Multi-level password protection (Supervisor, User, Coffee Break)
