The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies list animals around the world that are in danger of becoming extinct. Below are animals recently added to the endangered species list:

Dec. 5, 1997

* Callippe silverspot butterfly The Callippe Silverspot Butterfly (Speyeria callippe callippe) is a federal endangered species in the brush-footed butterfly family Nymphalidae. It is a member of the Heliconiinae, the subfamily known as longwings. The adult has a wingspan of just over two inches.  

* Alameda whipsnake

* Comal Springs riffle beetle

* Brother's Island tuatara tuatara (t'ətär`ə) or tuatera (–tā`rə), lizardlike reptile, Sphenodon punctatus,

* Mexican gray wolf

* San Bernardino kangaroo rat

* Fat threeridge mussel mussel, edible freshwater or marine bivalve mollusk. Mussels are able to move slowly by means of the muscular foot. They feed and breathe by filtering water through extensible tubes called siphons; a large mussel filters 10 gal (38 liters) of water per day.  

* Gulf moccasinshell mussel

* Peninsular bighorn sheep Bighorn sheep

a tall (up to 3 ft), heavy (up to 300 lb body weight) wild sheep that lives in inaccessible mountain country where it exercises its principal achievement of prodigious leaping and climbing. Called also Ovis canadensis. Several regional varieties, e.g. O. c.
