New mixing screw grows up.

Randcastle Extrusion Systems Inc., Cedar Grove, N.J., has sold the first commercial-scale Recirculator Screw, a single screw with a novel intensive-mixing section (U.S. Patent 6,962,431 B1, issued Nov. 2005). The 4.5-in.-diam., 32:1 L/D screw with three Recirculator sections was built by Xaloy in New Castle, Pa. Previously, the largest built was 2.5-in. diam.

The 4.5-in. version is used to reclaim barrier film of LDPE and EVOH and extrude it into a profile. The processor previously used a conventional barrier screw, Egan spiral mixer, and a compatibilizer additive. Randcastle says its Recirculator screw makes the part with 98% fewer defects even without compatibilizer and zero defects with compatibilizer. Randcastle: (973) 239-1150 * PTDirect: 261SV
