The grant was vital to secure match funding to transform a collection of listed World War I hangar buildings into a museum, training and exhibition complex. Now, the trust has unveiled plans to restart the project in three phases.
It is applying to the HLF for a pounds 1m grant to transform the first of the three hangars. If the bid is successful, the trust will make separate funding bids for the other two hangars.

The first funding bid, which must be lodged by June, is for a heritage centre featuring historic aircraft and artefacts, including a Russian bi-plane and a replica Hurricane aircraft. The trust hopes to submit the grant applications in 12 monthly intervals.
Under the plans, a second hangar will be used as a training facility for young people in aviation-related trades such as engineering, woodwork and metalwork metalwork. Copper, gold, and silver were probably fashioned into ornaments and amulets as early as the Neolithic period. Goldwork and silverwork have since employed the talents of leading artisans and artists in making jewelry, plate, inlays, and sculpture. .
A third hangar will be rented out as a commercial exhibition centre for trade fairs. Together, the hangars would provide 10,300sqm of floor space.
