New health care pavilion is planned in Long Island City.

Bradford Medical Construction Corporation has announced plans to convert space at One Queens Plaza Queens Plaza can mean the following:
  • Queens Plaza - Queens Plaza, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
  • Queens Plaza - Queens Plaza in Long Island City, Queens,New York, United States
in Long Island City to accommodate comprehensive outpatient health care providers. At 110,000 square feet, the proposed Queens Medical Plaza would be the largest non-hospital medical complex in Queens.

Bradford President Sandra Wilkin also announced the signing of a long-term lease on the property from Med Mac Properties. To implement the conversion, Bradford has assembled a team of specialists in marketing, design, construction, technology systems and consulting for the health care industry. The team currently is soliciting inquiries from major hospitals, managed health care and insurance companies and affiliated physician group practices, all of which could provide comprehensive outpatient and preventive care Preventive care is a set of measures taken in advance of symptoms to prevent illness or injury. "Queens Medical Plaza represents the future of health care delivery," Wilkin said. "The location and space is ideal for a multi-disciplinary facility. It can accommodate numerous suites for a full range of medical services, such as on-site diagnostics, primary care, physical therapy and specialty care."

The location will allow for the cost-effective delivery of quality health care, Wilkin said, because the cost per square foot of real estate in western Queens is "roughly one-third the amount in nearby Manhattan." In addition, a hospital, insurance company or managed care firm could house numerous physicians and provide comprehensive services under one roof, thus creating significant economies of scale.

Adapting One Queens Plaza for medical use, Wilkin notes, is in response to a tremendous and immediate need to provide health care to more than 725,000 residents and 66,500 employees located within a two-mile radius in western Queens, an area which encompasses Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside.

"It would provide medicine where it's needed most," she said, citing a recent report finding that half of all admissions to Manhattan hospitals had Queens addresses. "Many residents, who rely solely on hospital emergency rooms for all medical treatment, need a conveniently-located, modern complex specializing in outpatient and preventive services the duty performed by the armed police in guarding the coast against smuggling.
