SIP Developers Day Tuesday, October 1, 2002

8:30 - 9:30 am

Introduction to SIP

SIP, or Session Initiation Protocol (protocol) Session Initiation Protocol - (SIP) A very simple text-based application-layer control protocol. It creates, modifies, and terminates sessions with one or more participants. Such sessions include Internet telephony and multimedia conferences.

It is described in RFC 2543.
, is (as the name implies) a next-generation protocol that is designed for use in call setup and call control. And as ubiquitous as this protocol may seem if you were to look at any vendor's marketing materials, SIP is far from being deployed everywhere. But that is changing. SIP is constantly evolving. This session will serve as an introduction to SIP; what it is, and how developers can take advantage of all it has to offer. Other topics of discussion include SIP and 3G wireless, the use of SIP in next-gen cable telephony See cable telephone. , SIP's role in Presence and Instant Messaging Presence and Instant Messaging (PRIM) was an early proposal to the IETF of a standard protocol for instant messaging. No work has been done on it since 2001, however. Currently, SIP, its derivative SIMPLE, and XMPP are being considered for use as instant messaging protocols.  technologies, and more.

Keep it SIMPLE: Leveraging SIP for Presence and I.M.

SIP for Instant Messaging Exchanging text messages in real time between two or more people logged into a particular instant messaging (IM) service. Instant messaging is more interactive than e-mail because messages are sent immediately, whereas e-mail messages can be queued up in a mail server for seconds or  and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE) is a specification from the IETF See Internet Engineering Task Force.

And now, with Microsoft having thrown its considerable weight behind the initiative, it appears that SIP will indeed facilitate the addition of presence features to many telephony and conferencing applications. Come address the potential use of this technology in service provider environments as well as the ramifications ramifications nplAuswirkungen pl  for enterprise users, and how developers the world over can work to create new and exciting enhanced services Enhanced service is service offered over commercial carrier transmission facilities used in interstate communications, that employs computer processing applications that act on the format, content, code, protocol, or similar aspects of the subscriber's transmitted information;  based on SIP.

Come to this session and hear the truth about these two would-be combatants, get a feel for what each standard brings to the table, and see how much they might just come to depend on each other as next-generation networks evolve.

SIP: Bridging the Chasm Between Legacy and Next-Generation Networks

As more next-generation network elements are deployed and enterprises increasingly migrate to IP-based communications, the need for interoperability with the existing PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S.  becomes more apparent. SIP as lightweight, increasingly ubiquitous protocol, may play an important role in helping eliminate the gap between the PSTN and tomorrow's next-gen network. Attend this session and find out how developers are taking advantage of SIP to create a seamless bond that will bridge the chasm between legacy and next-generation networks.

SIP? NAP NOT!

Traversing the Firewall for SIP Call Completion

Securing the network has always been of utmost importance, but it's become an even more pressing issue these days. Carriers thinking about implementing SIP in their networks have a number of concerns at the network's edge, including the need to assert some sort of control on the signaling and media streams entering the network, the need to prevent unauthorized access, and how to deal with Network Address Translation (NAT (Network Address Translation) An IETF standard that allows an organization to present itself to the Internet with far fewer IP addresses than there are nodes on its internal network. ) issues that would otherwise render the network useless to SIP calls. Join us for this session as we delve into the world of SIP, and the protocol's relationship with NATs, firewalls, and so much more.

Honor, Commitment...

SLAs Mean Never Having to Say You're Sorry

SLAs were once simple formalities, usually put on the table only for larger "major account" customers who purchased large amounts of telephony services from a provider. They held little water, and even less in the way of a good night's sleep for enterprise IT managers. Competitive business environments have changed everything and these "telecom service pre-nups" are gaining in importance. Today, effective SLAs are key to enterprises and service providers alike. Attend this session to learn how to keep uptime at a maximum in a world where a minute can mean a million.

ENUM: IP-Enabling The Global Telephone Directory

ENUM is an IETF protocol designed to facilitate the convergence of IP networks and the PSTN. The protocol (IETF RFC (Request For Comments) A document that describes the specifications for a recommended technology. Although the word "request" is in the title, if the specification is ratified, it becomes a standards document.  2916) essentially enables the mapping of telephone numbers to Internet URLs. ENUM was developed, in part, in response to questions on how to access services on the Internet using the ubiquitous 12-key telephone keypad A telephone keypad is a keypad that appears on a “Touch Tone” telephone. It was standardised when the Dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) system was introduced in the 1960s, and replaced the rotary dial. . Thus, ENUM enables users to access Internet services from not only next-generation Internet-aware telephones and appliances, but also from regular phones connected to data networks through the use of gateways. One of the goals of our industry has been to make VoIP as transparent as possible, enabling VoIP calls to be as easy to make as regular PSTN calls. ENUM goes a long way to ensuring that objective is met. Come see what this means for you and for the future of our industry.

The Importance of Application Testing application testing - system testing

When a developer suggests that a network operator deploy a new application, what's the first thing the operator will need? Reassurance that the application will deliver the necessary quality over the network. The thorough operator will demand a quantitative demonstration that your application will perform adequately in terms of delay, jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle , echo, and overall voice quality, and that it can balance voice quality with network efficiency mechanisms, such as silence suppression Encoding the start and stop times of silence (lack of voice) in order to eliminate wasted bandwidth when sending voice over a packet-switched system.  and voice compression Same as speech compression. . Learn the critical importance of application testing and how to achieve your testing goals.

Design and Monitor Your Network to Deliver Optimal Quality of Service

Of course every packet should reach its destination, but some packets -- specifically, packets associated with voice and video transmissions -- demand real-time treatment. But how to ensure priority to packets associated with particular applications? How to selectively reduce latency and jitter to acceptably low levels? The key is enforcing Quality of Service (QoS). Moreover, QoS may figure into a variety of applications, including billing and service level enforcement applications, as well as applications that coordinate market segmentation Market Segmentation

Find Out Which Solutions Best Suit Your Needs

If you have one IP-PBX manufacturer, it's a "bleeding edge A pun on "leading edge." It implies that using the latest technology is often risky because it has not been tested with enough users and may not perform as expected. Introducing an advanced product or service is also risky because the user community may not be ready for it or really want " innovation. Two IP-PBX manufacturers is cause to take notice. Three lP-PBX manufacturers constitutes a trend. Four IP-PBX manufacturers is an industry; and anything more than that is certainly an indicator that IP-PBXs are going mainstream.

Labs reported in the May 2002 issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY[R] magazine that at least nine vendors now manufacture IP-PBX systems, which is a sign of good things to come for the IP-PBX market. While most phone systems sold today are still traditional PBXS, multi-billion dollar companies such as Cisco, Avava, Siemens, and others have seen the writing on the wall -- one-wire to the desktop voice and data convergence is not just a passing fad, of corporate phone systems.

In this lively panel discussion, leading manufacturers explain why their solution is best for your company -- or why it isn't!
