New flu and pneumonia quality measures come out.

 released four new flu and pneumococcal pneumococcal /pneu·mo·coc·cal/ (-kok´al) pertaining to or caused by pneumococci.  quality measures for both chronic and postacute care residents. The target period of Minimum Data Set selection for the flu shot measures covers October 1, 2005, to March 31, 2006, a CMS official said during the agency's Skilled Nursing Facility/Long-Term Care Open Door Forum. The reporting period for pneumococcal vaccinations was January 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006. CMS' new quality measures include the percentage of elible and willing

* chronic care residents who were vaccinated for the 2005-2006 flu season

Flu season is a term used to describe the regular outbreak in flu cases during the cold half of the year. Flu activity can sometimes be predicted and even tracked geographically.
 

* postacute care residents who were vaccinated for the 2005-2006 flu season

* chronic care residents with an up-to-date pneumococcal vaccination vaccination, means of producing immunity against pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria, by the introduction of live, killed, or altered antigens that stimulate the body to produce antibodies against more dangerous forms.  

* postacute care residents with an up-to-date pneumococcal vaccination
