New ferry crossing for Lake Powell.

Beginning in early May, a car ferry service on northern Lake Powell connecting two marinas could eliminate several hours' driving time for visitors to northern arizona and southern Utah. It also offers a new lake-crossing adventure for passengers on foot or bicycle.

The 100-foot ferry--big enough to haul two buses, eight cars, and 150 passengers--will connect Bullfrog and Hall's Crossing marinas and thus link Utah highways 276 and 263. (The entire route will be numbered 276 later this year.)

Named the John Atlantic Burr after a pioneer Utah rancher, the 245-ton ferry was designed by a firm in victoria, British Columbia. It's sturdy enough to ply oceans and is part of Utah's plan to develop tourism in southeastern Utah.

If ferry and ramp construction stays on schedule, the ferry will be dedicated May 4 at 11 A.M., and trips that day will be free. From May 6 through at least nid-September, daily service will be from 7 to 7. Thereafter, operating hours will be reduced. Food is available at both marinas but will not be served on the ferry.

One-way fares (no round-trip discount) will be $2 for ages 13 to 64, $1 for ages 5 through 12 and anyone with a bicycle, free for young children and seniors. Fee for cars, trucks, and campers up to 3/4 ton is $7, motorhomes $15. Add $10 for trailered boats. No reservations are accepted.

To make sure the ferry is in service, for departure times, and for lodging and boat rental information at both marinas, call (800) 528-6154. In Arizona, call (602) 278-8888.
