The organization was established in 1875 as the American Forestry Association, by physician/horticulturist John Aston Warder and a group of like-minded citizens . The parent tree was discovered in Thomasville in 1971 by Pierre Simmen. Simmen, now of Fuqua-Varina, NC, nurtured the tree for years and in 2002 patented it with his sister, Caroline Domenig, of Kernersville, NC. Domenig said they wanted to honor Timberlake's devotion to the beauty of North Carolina in the artwork he creates and also his work with Keep America Beautiful Keep America Beautiful is an environmental organization founded in 1953. It is the largest community improvement organization in the United States, with over 560 affiliate organizations (similar to local chapters) and more than 15,000 participating communities in their signature . The Bob Timberlake Eternal Dogwood is a vigorous grower and resistant to cold, drought, and mildew mildew, name for certain fungi and protists, for the diseases they cause in various crops, and for the discoloration (and sometimes the weakening and disintegration) they cause in such materials as leather, fabrics, and paper. . Its blooming season generally begins a week or more after the average dogwood, and each blossom has from eight to 20 large petals--more than a typical dogwood. "I was so honored when they asked and so proud that this beautiful tree came from North Carolina," Timberlake said. The dogwood is North Carolina's state tree. "New dogwoods are not an everyday occurrence," Caroline Domenig says. "We just want people to be able to enjoy the beauty of this tree that has meant so much to my brother and I." Domenig says she plans to donate a portion of the royalty she receives to a North Carolina camp for the blind and visually impaired. |
