New digs.

Remember the old Coleman Dairy facility on Asher Avenue, just southeast of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock?

Be sure to get a last look, because it'll soon be demolished in favor of a privatized student housing development that aims to more than double the current capacity for student housing at UALR by adding 700 beds.

Judy Williams, director of the communications office at UALR, confirmed that Place Properties of Atlanta aims to complete the first phase by fall 2008, with the second phase coming a year later.

"We had a waiting list in student housing, so any additional residences we obviously have a need for," Williams said. "We're bursting at the seams right now, despite having opened two new residence halls last year."

Williams said there are currently 650 students living in campus housing.

The idea is all part of the University District Revitalization Plan, which aims to redevelop the mostly dilapidated residential and commercial areas adjacent to the campus.

It's the second Arkansas adventure for Place Properties, which specializes in privatized student and military housing. It is also developing housing for Arkansas Tech University students called Vista Place. The UALR project, which is off campus, will aptly be called Coleman Place.

The project will begin with the demolition of the Coleman facility, which is expected sometime this month.
