New crosslinking agent is subject of BSCT meeting. At the October meeting of the British Society, Andrew Brown, of Cytec Surface Specialties, presented a talk on a new crosslinking agent for high durability industrial coatings. According to the speaker, Cylink 2000 is a tris(alkoxycarbonylamino)triazine) trifunctional resin with reactive carbamate functionality. It can be used to crosslink resins containing hydroxy or epoxy groups. Mr. Brown noted that the resin was designed to replace or partially replace melamine resins in baking applications, primarily in automotive applications. When compared to traditional melamine resins, the crosslinking agent reportedly does not self-condense or polymerize; provides better durability; provides polyurethane performance; has a better environmental and toxicological profile, as well as better acid etch performance; and provides better mar resistance in clearcoats. The speaker stated that the resin was initially developed as a formaldehyde-free alternative to melamine, and then other properties were discovered. During the meeting, FSCT Board Representative Joe Brown outlined the changes to the FSCT structure and governance. He encouraged members to vote for Board of Director candidates in the upcoming election. |
