New coating extends wear protection. (Tooling).A new line of mold coatings said to provide four to 10 times longer wear protection than other coatings is new from Balzers Inc., Amherst, N.Y. The latest of the firm's physical vapor-deposition (PVD PVD abbr. peripheral vascular disease PVD Peripheral vascular disease, see there ) coatings is Balinit Lumena, consisting of titanium titanium (tītā`nēəm, tĭ–) [from Titan], metallic chemical element; symbol Ti; at. no. 22; at. wt. 47.88; m.p. 1,675°C;; b.p. 3,260°C;; sp. gr. 4.54 at 20°C;; valence +2, +3, or +4. aluminum nitride nitride Any of a class of chemical compounds in which nitrogen is combined with an element of similar or lower electronegativity, such as boron, silicon, and most metals. Some examples of nitrides include boron nitride, calcium nitride, aluminum nitride, and cyanogen. (TiAIN) applied in thicknesses from 8 to 15 microns. The coating is suited to molds for plastics with high mineral and glass content. It is said to have excellent adhesion adhesion /ad·he·sion/ (ad-he´zhun) 1. the property of remaining in close proximity. 2. the stable joining of parts to one another, which may occur abnormally. 3. and to work well with large tools.
