PolyOne Corp. in Avon Lake, Ohio, has introduced a novel class of TPO compounds aimed at replacing existing TPEs in a wide range of markets. The matrix resins for PolyOne's olefin-based alloys are Engage metallocene-catalyzed ethylene-octene elastomers from DuPont Dow Elastomers, Wilmington, Del.

PolyOne's Elastamax EG family provides performance balances not found in conventional TPOs, states Chris Landis, general manager for TPE compounds at PolyOne. He credits this in part to special compounding technology developed by DuPont Dow that is able to compatibilize Engage elastomers with PE, PP, and other resins in ways that significantly enhance the flow and melt strength of the blends. In a reverse twist on normal TPO composition, initial Elastamax grades use Engage elastomers as the continuous phase in blends with PP and PE. The elastomer is not crosslinked.

Elastamax EG 9000 is a high-flow series for injection molding, especially thin-wall parts and applications involving long flow paths. EG 9100 grades have exceptionally high melt strength and sag resistance, suiting them to profile extrusion, blow molding, and calendering. Both EG series are available in Shore hardnesses of 65 to 90A. Current grades are priced between conventional TPOs and TPVs.

Elastamax TPOs are said to offer excellent feel and low-temperature toughness, good grain retention, and easy colorability. They can overmold rigid olefinic substrates in soft-touch applications. Sheet retains low gloss even after thermoforming. Tel: [phone], www.polyone.com
