to be introduced at this month's Plastics USA show in Chicago is claimed by the supplier to be a trend-setting advance in quietness, energy efficiency, and low maintenance. Thermal Care, Inc., Niles, Ill., believes it is the first industrial chiller maker to use a new type of compressor compressor, machine that decreases the volume of air or other gas by the application of pressure. Compressor types range from the simple hand pump and the piston-equipped compressor used to inflate tires to machines that use a rotating, bladed element to achieve  made by Turbocor Inc., Dorval, Que. It is oil-free, so there are none of the costs associated with oil management. More important, it has a built-in variable-frequency/variable-speed drive and frictionless magnetic bearings that require only 2 amps to levitate lev·i·tate

and start rotation of the compressor shaft. This start-up load is said to be much lower than for a normal compressor, which reduces a user's demand charges. Overall, the new compressor reportedly can cut energy costs by up to 30%

In addition, it is "whisper quiet," says Thermal Care, with a sound level of 71 dbA, vs. over 80dbA for standard units Standard units may refer to:

of similar size. The Turbocor compressor appears on Thermal Care's new TC Series, which come in 60- and 90-ton models (120 and 180 tons with dual circuits). It has high-efficiency electronic expansion valves (Steam Engine) a cut-off valve, to shut off steam from the cylinder before the end of each stroke.

and a PLC control with 79 points of diagnostic data per compressor. It is said to be cost-competitive with standard units at 90-ton size and larger. A TC chiller reportedly can replace an existing unit and pay for itself in energy and maintenance savings within two years. Tel: (847) 966-2260 * PT Direct: 581WT
