In the Roman Catholic church, the assembly of cardinals gathered to elect a new pope and the system of strict seclusion to which they submit. From 1059 the election became the responsibility of the cardinals.

* Slovenian Archbishop Franc Rode, C.M., 71, prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life;

* Italian Archbishop Agostino Vallini, 65, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura;

* Venezuelan Archbishop Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino, 63, of Caracas;

* Filipino Archbishop Gaudencio B. Rosales, 73, of Manila;

* French Archbishop Jean-Pierre Ricard, 61, of Bordeaux;

* Spanish Archbishop Antonio Canizares Llovera, 60, of Toledo;

* Korean Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-Suk, 74, of Seoul;

* American Archbishop Sean Patrick O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., 61, of Boston;

* Polish Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, 66, of Krakow;

* Italian Archbishop Carlo Caffarra, 67, of Bologna;

* Chinese Bishop Joseph Zen Zekiun, S.D.B., 74, of Hong Kong;

* three other cardinals, for services rendered, 80 and older, are: African Archbishop Peter Poreku Dery; 87, of Ghana; Italian Archbishop Andrea Di Montezemolo, 80; and Father Albert Vanhoye, S. J., biblical scholar.

The Holy Father is using the Consistory CONSISTORY, ecclesiastical law. An assembly of cardinals convoked by the pope. The consistory is public or secret. It is public, when the pope receives princes or gives audience to ambassadors; secret, when he fills vacant sees, proceeds to the canonization of saints, or judges and  set for March 24 to call a meeting of all the world's cardinals in Rome.
