New cancer center huge beneficiary of UCSD campaign.

Business Boost: The new cancer center at UC San Diego was one of the top beneficiaries when the school wrapped up its seven-year, $1 billion Imagine What's Next campaign earlier this month.

The Campaign for UCSD began with a $20 million donation from UC Regent and campaign co-chair John Moores and his wife, Rebecca Moores.

The center, which was dedicated last year, is named the Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center. Moores is owner of the San Diego Padres.

The final donation, a $34 million gift from physician George Ury, was made recently and will go toward cancer research at the center, which functions include clinical trials, prevention programs, community outreach and patient care.

Other heath care-related donations to come from the campaign include: $10 million to support the construction of a state-of-the-art facility that will centralize UCSD's patient care and research activities in heart and vascular disease and stroke management; and $30 million to the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
