Prompted by a sharp rise in the prices of financial stocks, several well-known bankers are opening new business banks in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Commonwealth Business Bank, with $23.1 million in assets, opened earlier this month after receiving approval from the state Department of Financial Institutions.

Jack Choi, a former senior vice president at Hanmi Financial Corp.'s Hanmi Bank, is Commonwealth's president and chief executive. Tim Haight, dean of the College of Business and Economics at Cal State Los Angeles, is chairman. Elena Chart, a former senior vice president and chief financial officer at Cathay General Bancorp, will be executive vice president and chief financial officer.

 bankers are joining forces again to launch a business bank in Encino that has the same name as a previous bank they sold, California United Bank.
