 have recently been ordered to carry guns as they work. The order is part of a new policy intended to increase their supervision of probationers by requiring the officers to make routine visits to probationers' homes and neigbourhoods.

The practice of probation officers carrying guns has been growing around the U.S.A. in the past two years. Probation departments are arming their officers as the number of probationers increases and the officers' duties become more dangerous due to increased home and neighbourhood visits.

United Probation Officers Association president Dominic Coluccio hailed the new policy as a "step in the right direction," also said that firearms This is an extensive list of small arms — pistol, machine gun, grenade launcher, anti-tank rifle — that includes variants.
