New York Times Television Program with Discovery Channel Wins Two Emmy Awards; 'Mortal Enemies' Recognized for Writing and for Graphic and Artistic Design.

"These awards are a recognition of our belief that The Times's quality of journalism can be extended to television," said Mr. Schmemann in his acceptance speech. He also paid special tribute to Scott Willis, who produced the documentary, for helping him translate his writing skills to television.

"Mortal Enemies," which aired on the Discovery Channel on June 14, 2002, examined the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lives of Yasir Arafat and Ariel Sharon. The program featured original interviews and painted a vivid picture of these two extraordinary figures.
