New York City

City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S.
public schools can breathe a little easier now, thanks to the recent installation of School Technology Management, Inc.'s computerized Comprehensive Attendance, Administration, and Security System (CAASS CAASS Comprehensive Attendance, Administration, and Security System (STM Group)

).

CAASS uses photo identification cards with barcodes to screen students as they enter the school building and to record attendance. If a person attempts to enter a school without a valid photo ID, the system sounds an alarm to draw staff members' attention.

"We originally developed CAASS as a way to automate attendance tasks that were being performed by school faculty," said John Amatruda, President of School Technology Management, Inc. "As we implemented CAASS into several large school districts around the country and refined the system, we found that it was an excellent way to make schools safer without requiring teachers to perform additional administrative tasks."

In addition to its functionality as an automated attendance and security system, CAASS can phone parents about attendance issues, track textbooks issued to students, and print report cards. Parents with Internet access See how to access the Internet.  can even log into a secure website to verify that their child arrived at school that day.

The system runs on the Microsoft Windows operating system and can be run on virtually any PC, making it affordable even for poorly funded schools.
