New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946.  has appointed BRIGHT SHENG Bright Sheng (surname Sheng, born Shèng Zōngliàng, , in Shanghai, China, December 6, 1955) is a Chinese-American composer, conductor, and pianist. He has lived in the United States since 1982 and is on faculty at the University of Michigan.  its first composer-in-residence; the residency A duration of stay required by state and local laws that entitles a person to the legal protection and benefits provided by applicable statutes.
