New York Check Cashers Announce 1999 Scholarship Winners.NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3-- The Check Cashers Association of New York, Inc. (CCANY), in conjunction with Minneapolis-based Travelers Express Company, Inc., named the 1999 winners of its fourth annual scholarship competition. The first place winners were honored at a luncheon on May 26, at the Crowne Plaza-LaGuardia Hotel here. The annual scholarship program, "Rewarding Young Leaders in Our Community," gives cash grants to outstanding high school seniors in the New York City Public schools, using leadership skills in both school and local community, financial need and academic achievement as the criteria to identify winners in each borough. First place winners received a one-time grant of $3,000; second place winners received $1,250; and, third place winners, $750. "What impresses me most about the CCANY scholarship program is that they personally touch the lives of the youngsters they are helping," said Ronnie Solow, director of special projects, K-12 New York City Board of Education. "Once again, we were amazed to see the high caliber of talent in our schools," said Sanford Herman, chairman of CCANY's scholarship committee. "All of this year's scholarship candidates were exceptional, which made selecting winners more difficult than ever before."
